Our Story
Simmons Winery, 450 North Brewery, 450 North Spirits, and The Barrel Lounge are located on the Simmons family farm in rural Columbus, Indiana. Owners David and Brenda Simmons, along with their adult children Daron, Aaron, and Lauren own and operate the businesses. The Simmonses are rooted in agriculture and have been farming corn and soybeans on this land for over 150 years. Growth, whether agricultural or business related, has always been at the forefront of the Simmons philosophy.
Simmons Winery was first established in 2000 after an Indiana grape shortage sparked the need for native French- American hybrid grapes. A background in chemistry, coupled with a lifetime of farming, helped David Simmons to firmly establish Simmons Winery as a fruitful Indiana business. Simmons Winery produces 26 varieties of wine and currently distributes wine in Indiana.
The Nortonburg Wine Garden banquet hall was first opened in 2006. It hosted many weddings, receptions, corporate events, and other celebrations before closing in 2020 due to COVID. The Nortonburg Wine Garden, now called The Barrel Lounge, is undergoing renovations and is set to reopen for business in April, 2026.
An itch for growth and a love for fermentation led to the opening of 450 North Brewing Company in 2012. A staple for beer and wood-fired pizza in rural Indiana, 450 North’s restaurant and taproom draws national crowds all year long. Throughout the years, the brewery has grown and expanded, adding additional warehouses, restaurant spaces, brewing equipment, and a canning line with pasteurizer.
450 North Brewing has always pushed innovation and creativity through libations. In 2018, 450 North was one of the first to create and popularize a “Slushy” smoothie style sour ale. The daring fruit and adjunct combinations, along with monthly themed beer releases, helped 450 North grow a cult-like nationwide following for the Slushy brand. 450 North Brewing distributes shelf-stable Slushys, IPAs, and other house beers throughout Indiana, 30 US states, and to seven international countries.
450 North Spirits opened in November 2023. 450 North Spirits gin, vodka, and whiskeys are hand-crafted on a 600-gallon copper pot still with a nine-plate column from corn grown on the Simmons farm.
